Compare and Contrast Research Paper Writing: Creating A List of References

When writing a paper you will find that your reference list should be at the end. The purpose of your reference page is to give a list of any sources that you used for the paper. This allows the reader to be able to look up the things that you cited to ensure they are correct or to get further clarification on them.

If you cited something in your paper than you have to put it on your page for references. This is extremely important for you to remember. You also want to remember that your need to start the references on a new page. You also need to center the word references at the top of the page. It should not have quotations around it, be italicized, or be underlined.

Basic Rules

  • Alphabetize your references by their last names.
  • Double-space all references.
  • A hanging indentation needs to be used for each of your references.
  • One the first letter for an article title needs to be capitalized. If there is a colon the letter after the colon should be a capital letter as well. Do not italicize, underline, or place the title in quotations.
  • Works that are long such as a journal or book does need to be in italics.
  • If using a journal you so capitalize all of the words that are major.

Helpful Tip

If you add your citations throughout your paper you will be able to let word make the reference page for you. You may have to edit the format of it and change the name of the page but it can save you sometime. You will simply add the citations as you go and when you are done you can tell it make the works cited or bibliography page where you can then make any necessary changes to the format.

As you can see making your reference page for your compare and contrast research paper is not as difficult as you may have thought it to be. Remember to make sure that you don't leave any important sources off the references page. Also make sure that if you have cited them through the paper that they are used on the reference page. If you keep these things in mind you are sure to find that you will be happy with the results of your reference page for your research paper.
